The purpose of this page it to highlight other things that are going on.  I hope to update it regularly, but you never know.

* Mississippi CoCoRaHS
August 1st, 2008 Mississippi joined a national rainfall reporting network called CoCoRaHS, which stands for Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network.   Anyone can volunteer!  All you need are an official rain gauge, the desire to report rainfall observations daily and an internet connection. An interest in weather and a desire to help scientists collect better weather data also help.

July 12-20, 2007

In 2007 I partipated in the Weather and Society Integrated Studies Program (WAS*IS) at the  National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).  This is a great program that brings meteorologists together with social scientists, and academic, private and public indiustry together to foster understanding among the groups.  Its goal is to fully integrate social science into meteorological research, thereby increasing the positive social impacts of research and technology.

This is a trip designed for students who are part of the Teachers in Geosciences masters degree program.  It is taken their final semester before graduating.  We had a great trip.  The trip began in Ontario, CA and ended with a day in Yosemite.   We made a number of stops along the way including the Bristlecone Pine forest, the Alabama Hills, Mono Lake and numerous stops along windy, steep dirt roads.

Noticeable this year were the consequences of a low-snow winter.  Below are photos I took in 2006 and 2007 at the same site at Horseshoe Lake (near Mammoth Lakes).  Winter 2005-06 was above-average for the state in terms of  precipitation.  Winter 2006-07 was below-average.
