At the present time I am working at the Research and Curriculum Unit. The Research and Curriculum Unit (RCU) is funded by the Mississippi Legislature Senate Bill No. 2796 (see appendix A) to provide curriculum development, personnel development, program improvement, and research to improve vocational and technical education and workforce development in Mississippi. The primary role of the RCU PD section, as part of a joint project of the Mississippi Department of Education, Mississippi State Board of Community and Junior Colleges (see appendix B), and Mississippi State University, is to provide standards- and researched-based professional development to Mississippi’s secondary and postsecondary vocational educators. The RCU PD Section is not for hire, in competition with vendors, or a public relations producing entity. The Professional Development Section works closely with Curriculum, Research, and Assessment Section, and Industry Training for Workforce Development Section to deliver effective professional development for vocational and technical education personnel, both preservice and inservice. Special emphasis is placed on integrating academics, skill standards, soft skills, and technology into training. Professional development activities are developed as a result of a thorough needs assessment and research of all participants. Professional development specialists work with Program Coordinators at the Mississippi Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Technical Education to provide “high quality” training using different media.
